KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson know how hard it can be to find the perfect nude lipstick. In fact, that's exactly why the duo launched their beauty brand, Mented Cosmetics, in 2017 with six neutral-toned lipsticks, including this semi-matte shade—called Nude LaLa—which is the perfect blend of browns and pinks.
- MAC lipsticks have pretty much been with us—in our bags, our cars, our jackets, and our carry-on luggage—for as long as we can remember. The brand is so pervasive in the industry, it'd be difficult to think of a time or a memory when we didn't have a least one MAC product in our arsenal.
- MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour Swatches Dark Skin The Style and Beauty Doctor. MAC RETRO MATTE LIPSTICKS for Dark Skin - Duration: 6:05. Lauren and the City 457,050 views. Aug 21, 2019 I talked to two celebrity makeup artists to find these 15 best lipsticks for dark skin tones, from brands like MAC, Pat McGrath, Fenty Beauty, Nars, and more.
Buying MAC lipsticks can be overwhelming. There are so many colors, so many finishes, and so many 'must-have' posts and videos to view prior to making your purchase.
Well, get read, because I'm throwing another one at you.
The best thing to do before purchasing anything is research. With makeup, especially high-end makeup, it's extremely beneficial to see the product on other people. Why do you think the beauty blog and Youtube worlds are so popular? While I don't have enough lipsticks (in my opinion) to share the top 10 must-haves just yet, I do want to talk about a few of my favorites. When I say favorite, I mean these are the shades I keep on heavy rotation and add to my travel or weekender bag without a second thought.
As always, I'm NC 45/NC 50 in foundation shades for your reference. Listed in no particular order–because let's be real, I love them all equally* for different reasons–these are my favorite MAC lipstick shades:
5 Must-Have MAC Lipsticks for WOC
- Captive
- Twig
- Whirl
- Diva
Amorous
Amorous is described by MAC as a 'lovestruck cranberry' with a satin finish. I personally don't get anything on the side of cranberry, but I love the color nonetheless. On my lips, it's more of a cool-tone pink with plum undertones. Amorous a color I like to wear as the everyday mauve shade. It provides enough color to be noticed, but not so much to be the focus.
Captive
I know what you're thinking — Chelsey, this looks just like Amorous! And to that I say, you're pretty much right. The average person does not need both Captive and Amorous, one will do just fine. I happen to have both because I was so indecisive as to which one I wanted that I decided to leave with them and return whichever one I decided against. Clearly, I never got around to it…not to mention, there is a small difference between Captive and Amorous. Captive is on the warmer pink side, while Amorous is more cool-toned.
Captive is a pinkish-plum color with a satin finish that I reach for when I want a little flush of color without opting for a bold lip.
Twig
I've raved about Twig before in a monthly favorites post, and with good reason. Before Whirl, Twig was my all-time favorite. It actually looks a little pinker in the photograph than in real life, but this is what I deem as the 'your lips but better' color. Twig is a soft brownish pink shade, suitable for a variety of skin tones. It blends with your natural lip color to bring out the best shade, so keep that in mind while purchasing: it will not look the same on everyone.
The best thing about Twig is the satin finish, meaning it provides a nearly matte look without the drying factor.
Whirl
*Okay so I said that I love them all equally for different reasons, but I have to admit that Whirl is my all-time favorite. It takes precedence over the rest because the color is everything I never knew I needed. It was even featured in my most recent favorites post.
Easily, Whirl was the most talked about lipstick shade a few years ago. While it was almost annoyingly overexposed, I'm actually glad the hype happened; otherwise, we may never have gotten this shade in lipstick form. If you didn't know, Whirl was previously only available as a lip liner. Now, it's a permanent shade in the lipstick range.
The important thing to note about MAC's Whirl (and all neutral lip colors) is that it doesn't look the same on everyone. I bought it because I liked the shade in the tube, but I was a bit skeptical as to how it would look on me. To my surprise, I immediately fell in love with it.
Whirl is a beautiful dusty rose shade that works with my natural lip color to create a deeply muted everyday shade. A lipliner is not required, but I usually pair it with MAC's Plum liner to play up the deeper tones and add more dimension. The shade is a matte finish, which is my only gripe. Satin is the best of both worlds, so I do wish MAC chose a satin finish to keep Whirl away from the dry feeling after a few hours of wear.
Diva
Diva is also a matte finish and is a gorgeous deep red shade with blue undertones. Mac pro 2019 music production. If cherry red isn't your cup of tea but you aren't quite ready for a nearly black lip, Diva is the happy medium. Diva is my go-to shade for a night out when I want to wear a bold lip, and I even wore it on the most recent outfit of the day post.

A couple of months back, I did a quick little post on Instagram showing my top 5 nudes for Indian Skin! The link to that is here
Till date, that stands my most loved post ever! Almost 40 of you guys saved it, which is a big deal to me! 🙂 I received a lot of requests from you all to do more of these! So here I am, with an updated Top 5 Nudes!
Before you begin reading, I'd like to inform you one thing – the lipsticks in the last post of mine were more of those which could be worn by all skintones, fair, medium, deep! Here, I am including a lot of shades which may be almost too brown and pink for the fairer sex! I do have one shade that would look stunning on all skintones – irrespective of the fact that you are pale or dark! The reason is, I want to make my page as inclusive as possible! So you will find posts for the fair skinned, olive skinned, dark skinned, basically for everyone on this page!
So with that being said and after that really long intro, let's quickly see what my Top 5 Nude Lipstick picks are for Brown Skintones! 😀
- Colorbar's Velvet Matte Lipstick in ‘High Tea'
Retailing for just ₹325, this is a stunning brown – nude that would look amazing on deeper skins! It is a velvet/soft matte and looks amazing, especially with smokey eyes! For the lighter skinned beauties, this would be a great brown, perfect for this time of the year, when everyone brings out their dark lipsticks and deeper eyeshadows!
2. Nelf USA's Lipstick in ‘VT 21 Amaze'
Priced at a very affordable ₹250, this has to be the best priced lipstick in this list! I came across this brand almost 3 years ago at a mall! And it has now launched on Nykaa as well! While the price and the name of the brand might make you skeptical about the ingredients or quality of the product, I read all of that and only then put it in this list! This lipstick literally is just like any Maybelline or Lakme lipstick that you might own! Stunning pink colour for fair and wheatish skin and a great nude for darker skins, really good longevity and staying power, and a boon for the pocket too! If you're still skeptical, do give it a swatch if you ever come across this brand. And you'd be amazed as well! Haha, see what I did there? 😉
3. Maybelline Lip Polish in ‘Glam 13'
When I had initially seen this at my local Health and Glow, I refused to even Swatch it. It looks like a muddy brown-pink in the tube, which put me off instantly. However, the sales rep there finally made me swatch it and omg! This is such a lovely nude gloss, I can't even tell you! Priced at ₹450, this is a great MLBB gloss that you can just swipe on your lips and go! It would look great on all skintones because of the prominent pink undertones it has! Lovely colour. Must try if you like nudes AND glosses!
4. Lakme 9to5 Lipstick in ‘Brownie Point'
This is the shade from the original 9to5, but it has been relaunched with a better formula in the 9to5 Primer Plus Matte Collection by Lakme! A neutral brown colour, this would work amazing as a brown nude for darker skintones or on anyone who prefers brown nudes over pink nudes! On fair to even medium skin though, this would look like a true reddish brown! So if you're up for a brown, especially for this Fall-Winter seasons, grab this! It is also almost always on a discount on Nykaa as well!
5. MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in ‘Creme in your Coffee'
Anyone who knows me would know that this HAD to appear in my list! I even did a blog post reviewing this stunning colour! You've got to give this a shot if you're olive skinned or darker! It's an amazing MLBB colour which I have almost finished (which is super rare for me btw – I never finish lipsticks) Highly recommend you to check it out if you have the budget of ₹1500!
Overall, if you'd ask me – what are the absolute favourites of yours – I'd say if you're on a budget – Colorbar's High Tea and if not, MAC's Creme in your Coffee (obv)!
Do let me know of other Top 5s you'd like me to do! I'm all up for challenges! 😎
