Butter Filesystem. I've started experimenting with BtrFS which aims to provide an 'advanced and modern filesystem' (heavily compared to ZFS) on Linux. With my new workstation I've started using BtrFS for my home directories (/home) and my build directories (/mnt/slackbuilds) to gain exposure to the filesystem and compare it to ZFS and EXT4 on LVM (all of my other data. As mentioned by dialabrain Paragon ExtFS is the solution to using Ext3 and Ext4 drives on a Mac. With regards to BTRFS this is currently available for Linux based systems and I believeit has been ported to FreeBSD as well. However there is definitely no implementation of it for the Mac.

For a small mainly Mac company as yours sounds a Mac server as a file server will be fine. Even though a Mac server is not able to do everything a Windows server can specifically Active Directory it should be sufficient for simple file server access.


One issue that can arise but may be less applicable to you is the fact that Mac and Windows use different systems for 'indexing' files for searching the contents of the files. While a Mac server can do this for the benefit of Mac clients, it cannot do it for the benefit of Windows clients. Normally the opposite is also true in that a Windows server normally cannot index files for the benefit of Mac clients. However it is possible to buy and install Acronis Access Connect - formerly called ExtremeZ-IP which is software that runs on top of a Windows server to both add AFP support and indexing of files for Mac clients. This would be more applicable to general office documents like Word files and PDF documents and not as applicable to CAD drawings.

You should use RAID on whatever server you get to protect against a single drive failing and taking with it all your data. RAID by itself does not necessarily protect against corruption. To protect against corruption it more down to using advanced (newer) file systems, as examples there are ZFS, BTRFS and will be APFS. List of mac os versions.


Unfortunately ZFS and BTRFS are not supported on Macs and APFS which will be Apple's new entry to this category has only just been announced and will not be available until sometime in 2017. Even then as it is as yet uncompleted we don't know how effective its anti-corruption features will be, at the moment it seems Apple have not yet added some checksumming features that would really be needed to be a complete solution. To use ZFS or BTRFS you really would need to use a Linux server. Install android sdk mac. A Windows server would use NTFS which is superior to Apple's current HFS+ but may be overtaken by APFS once it is finished. ZFS is currently regarded as the most powerful solution.

For remote access by computers the best option is to setup a VPN server. While there is a VPN server built-in to Apple's server software I regard it as increasingly feeble and dated. I would therefore suggest using a hardware VPN server, many Firewalls and routers have or have the option of a built-in VPN server. You will definitely find remote access a lot slower.
